  • Fertilize flower beds, lawns and gardens before the end of the month. Our two favorites, Lady Bug 8-2-4 and Nature’s Guide 4-3-2 are both poultry based with lots of other good additives.

  • Fertilize flower pots now for attractive fall color. Plants you plan to move inside will need to get in good shape before the winter. Our favorite container fertilizer is earthworm castings. It has no smell and a light dusting on the soil is easy to apply.

  • Plant fall vegetables: broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and Brussels sprouts.

  • Plant evergreen herbs: burnet, leaf celery, lavender, parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme You can use them all winter.

  • Plant perennial herbs; catnip, chives, lemon balm, mint, Mexican mint marigold, oregano. Although they will freeze back in the winter, they will return bigger than ever.

TIP OF THE MONTH..................

September is the last month of the year to fertilize your plants. We love using organic poultry based fertilizers. They contain either chicken or turkey manure. We carry several different kinds with a variety of ingredients like molasses, seaweed, feather meal and humates included. By using one kind of fertilizer in the fall and a different one in the spring, you will provide your plants a wide range of nutrients. The fertilizers are easy to apply as a top dressing over your mulch. As you water in the fertilizer, it becomes manure tea and soaks down through the roots of your plants. Organic fertilizers are great because they have been composted and will not burn your plants. As with all fertilizers, it is important to water them in right after application.

  • Houseplants need to be moved inside this month. Groom and spray them with horticultural oil to safe guard against bringing insects inside.

  • By mid-month plant cool season annuals: Pansies, Cyclamen, Dianthus, Snapdragons, Violas.

  • Organize your thoughts while everything is big and fluffy for next months chores. Make lists of plants to transplant, divide or remove completely.

  • Harvest any summer herbs for drying or freezing before the first frost.

  • Plant fruit trees and berry bushes this month.
